Sunday Night Meditation

This ongoing weekly drop-in class in insight meditation includes sitting meditation, dharma talk, discussion.  The class offers an opportunity for students to discuss the development of their meditation skills and how dharma practice can be a support in their daily lives.  After the class there will be refreshments and time for getting to know one another.
Meditation experience is expected.

Foundations of Mindfulness
Thursdays, September – December

In this four-month program we’ll have a precious opportunity to make a in-depth study of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness.  The teaching on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Four Frame of Reference) is one of the most essential of the Buddha’s teachings.  In this teaching, the Buddha explicates the practice of mindfulness, the skill by which we move toward an alleviation of suffering and a greater happiness of our lives.  During this time we’ll study the teaching, as laid out in the Satipatthana Sutta; and we’ll learn to develop our ability to practice mindfulness.  The course will include meditation, teaching and instruction, discussion, and suggestions for practice.  All interested students are invited to attend.
*Please note, you should have taken a beginners’ level course or have equivalent training. 

November Daylong Retreat

This day-long retreat will be held in the traditional insight meditation form, allowing participants to experience stillness and insight in a supportive environment. The day will include periods of sitting and walking meditation. There will be a dharma talk and opportunities for interviews.
*Please note that this is a program for students experienced in insight meditation.

December Sutta Study
Saturday, December 2

In this class we’ll explore one of the suttas (discourses of the Buddha). The class will include instruction, discussion and meditation. Particular attention will be paid to the relevance of the teaching to our contemporary urban lives.

DMC Residential Retreats

Eight-Day Insight Meditation Retreat
April 5 – April 13, 2018
Powell House
Old Chatham, NY
This silent retreat will be held in the traditional insight meditation form, allowing participants to experience stillness and insight in a supportive environment. The retreat will include sitting and walking meditation, dharma talks and interviews. This eight-day retreat offers a precious opportunity for a deepening of inner silence and clear seeing.
Please note that this is a retreat for Downtown Meditation Community members. If you have questions about your participation, please see the Guiding Teacher. All students must have the approval of the Guiding Teacher.
Please note that we will be accepting a limited number of registrations for the retreat.
The retreat begins in the evening on Thursday, April 5, and ends in the afternoon on Friday, April 13.
The cost for the retreat is:

You will be able to reserve a place in the retreat by sending a $100 deposit. You must pre-register for the retreat. Please note you’ll forfeit your deposit if you cancel your registration after March 6, 2018.
All retreatants will have a single room.  Powell House in an approximately 2.5 hour drive from NYC.  There is an Amtrak train that goes to Hudson NY; the Hudson station is an approximately 30 drive from Powell House.  Prior to the retreat we will organize car pools, etc., for retreatants.
In order for DMC to cover the cost of retreats and offer scholarships to students we depend on the generosity of those who are able to contribute to our “Retreat Fund.” Please indicate when you send your registration if you are able to contribute and how much you can offer.
Please note that you will be able to make a donation to the teacher at the retreat.

There will be an opportunity to make a contribution (dana) to the teacher at classes/retreats. Students may want to to consider giving through the pledge method; information about the pledge method is provided at DMC classes. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
