Sunday Night Meditation

This ongoing weekly drop-in class in insight meditation includes sitting meditation, dharma talk, discussion.  The class offers an opportunity for students to discuss the development of their meditation skills and how dharma practice can be a support in their daily lives.  After the class there will be refreshments and time for getting to know one another.
Meditation experience is expected.
*Please note:  Peter Doobinin will not be teaching the Sunday class during May & June.  The class will be led by other teachers including Paul Weinfield, Kristine Marx, Debra Flics, and Angela Dews.

Please join us for our Vesak Celebration!
Vesak, the most important holiday on the Buddhist calendar marks the Buddha’s birthday.
The Family & Friends Potluck Dinner provides an opportunity for Downtown Meditation students to practice and share in community along with their family members and friends. You are encouraged to invite family and friends to attend this gathering, which will consist of a short period of meditation, a meditation-related teaching, and a pot-luck dinner. We hope you and your family and friends will join us. Please let us know if you will be able to bring food (vegetarian) and/or beverage (non-alcoholic) to help with our meal.

at the Open Center

This course is a New York Open Center program.
This five-week course will provide instruction in the fundamentals of insight meditation. Emphasis will be placed on learning the practices of sitting and walking meditation, and developing mindfulness in daily life.

July Sutta Study

In this class we’ll explore one of the suttas (discourses of the Buddha). The class will include instruction, discussion and meditation. Particular attention will be paid to the relevance of the teaching to our contemporary urban lives.

Meditation & Yoga Daylong Retreat

This day-long retreat, which will include periods of sitting meditation and yoga, will offer students an opportunity to develop stillness and insight, and deepen in mindfulness of the body. The yoga will be gentle and suitable for new and experienced practitioners. Students who do not wish to participate in the yoga will be able to do walking meditation. There will be a dharma talk and opportunities for personal interviews.
If possible, please bring a yoga mat (some will be provided).

August Sutta Study

Thursday Night Meditation
(Thursday Night Meditation is for students with experience in Insight Meditation.)

Thursday Meditation 
Thursdays, May – June

During these two months the Thursday class will be led by DMC students.  Each class will include a period of sitting meditation, followed by either a reading and presentation by a student, or a recorded dharma talk.  The last part of the class will be an opportunity for discussion.

Natural Meditation Workshop
Thursdays, July – August

In these class we’ll develop our skill of practicing mindfulness in our daily lives.  By learning to maintain mindfulness of breath and body in all postures and all our activities, we remain centered amidst the movements and changes of life; we’re better able to heedful, to play attention to our actions and discern which actions support us in our efforts to find true happiness; and we’re more able to stay connected to our heart.   The workshop will be an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of natural meditation, and to deepen in our skill in this critical facet of dharma practice.  The classes will include, meditation, teaching and discussion, and suggestions for practice.

DMC Residential Retreats

Meditation & Yoga Weekend Retreat
with Peter Doobinin & Carla Stangenberg
September 22 – September 24
Garrison Institute
Garrison, NY
This two-day residential retreat will offer students an opportunity to develop stillness and insight, and deepen in mindfulness of the body.  The retreat will include periods of sitting meditation, walking meditation, and yoga.
The retreat will be held in silence except for instruction, meetings with the teachers, and dharma talks.  The yoga will be suitable for newer and more experienced practitioners.  Students should have some experience in meditation and yoga.
The retreat begins in the evening on Friday, September 22, and ends in the afternoon on Sunday, September 24.
The cost for the retreat is:
$550   (single room)
$500   (double room)
Please note that the course fee includes payment for the teachers.
You will be able to reserve a place in the retreat by sending a $100 deposit. You must pre-register for the retreat. Please note you’ll forfeit your deposit if you cancel your registration after August 31, 2017.
Please indicate when you register whether you’d like a single or double room. The retreat fee includes three vegetarian meals per day.  Garrison Institute is approximately one hour from the city.  The center is easily accessible via Metro North, it is a one hour train ride from Grand Central.  A shuttle bus will pick up retreatants at the Garrison station.

There will be an opportunity to make a contribution (dana) to the teacher at classes/retreats. Students may want to to consider giving through the pledge method; information about the pledge method is provided at DMC classes. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
