Sunday Night Meditation

This ongoing weekly drop-in class in insight meditation includes sitting meditation, dharma talk, discussion.  The class offers an opportunity for students to discuss the development of their meditation skills and how dharma practice can be a support in their daily lives.  After the class there will be refreshments and time for getting to know one another.
Meditation experience is expected.

Six-Week New Students’ Course

This six-week course will provide instruction in the fundamentals of insight meditation. Emphasis will be placed on learning the practices of sitting and walking meditation, and developing mindfulness in daily life. Explanation of the teachings central to insight meditation will be part of each class.
The course provides an introduction to Downtown Meditation Community.
Each class will include time for discussion and student’s questions. The course is suitable for students with no previous experience, as well as experienced meditators who wish to renew their practice.

An Evening Talk:  Skillful Pleasure

This evening Peter Doobinin will give a talk on “Skillful Pleasure.”  The evening will include meditation, dharma talk and discussion of the theme. The class is offered freely; students will have an opportunity to make a donation (dana) to the teacher.  All are welcome.

April Sutta Study

11am – 1pm
In this class we’ll explore one of the suttas (discourses of the Buddha). The class will include instruction, discussion and meditation. Particular attention will be paid to the relevance of the teaching to our contemporary urban lives.

April Daylong Retreat

Thursday Night Meditation
(Thursday Night Meditation is our class for dedicated students.  We define a dedicated student as anyone who is interested in developing a commitment to dharma practice and DMC.  It is expected that students have experience in meditation; you should have taken a New Students course or have equivalent training.)

Mindfulness of Thinking Workshop

During these two months we’ll learn to develop our mindfulness of thinking.  When we are able to practice this skill, we make great strides in our efforts to alleviate suffering.  And, as the Buddha tells us, this is a skill that we all can develop. In this workshop we’ll learn the elements of the skill for being mindful of thinking; and we’ll learn to cultivate skillful thinking. The classes will include, meditation, teaching and discussion, and suggestions for practice.

DMC Residential Retreats

DMC Eight-Day Retreat
March 30 – April 7, 2017
Powell House
Old Chatham, NY

This silent retreat will be held in the traditional insight meditation form, allowing participants to experience stillness and insight in a supportive environment. The retreat will include sitting and walking meditation, dharma talks and interviews. This eight-day retreat offers a precious opportunity for a deepening of inner silence and clear seeing.

Please note that this is a retreat for experienced meditation students. If you have questions about your participation, please see the Guiding Teacher. All students must have the approval of the Guiding Teacher.

Please note that we will be accepting a limited number of registrations for the retreat. 

The retreat begins in the evening on Thursday, March 30, and ends in the afternoon on Friday, April 7.

The cost for the retreat is: 

$600 (low)
$700  (average)
$800  (high) 

You will be able to reserve a place in the retreat by sending a $100 deposit. You must pre-register for the retreat. Please note you’ll forfeit your deposit if you cancel your registration after February 27, 2017.

All retreatants will have a single room. Powell House in an approximately 2.5 hour drive from NYC.   There is an Amtrak train that goes to Hudson NY; the Hudson station is an approximately 30 drive from Powell House.   Prior to the retreat we will organize car pools, etc., for retreatants.
In order for DMC to cover the cost of retreats and offer scholarships to students we depend on the generosity of those who are able to contribute to our “Retreat Fund.” Please indicate when you send your registration if you are able to contribute and how much you can offer.

Please note that you will be able to make a donation to the teacher at the retreat.

Students may want to to consider giving through the pledge method; information about the pledge method is provided at DMC classes. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
